Spiegel im Spiegel

2014

Enclosed within an aluminum frame and beneath a dichroic film, precise monolithic shapes drift in a mirrored macrocosm. The minimalist geometry seems to transcend boundaries, offering multiple impressions of dimensional potential. Each piece, a three-dimensional object conveying a two-dimensional surface, invites viewers to look beyond the reflection and into the void.

From the front, viewers might initially focus on the reflective surface, but from different angles, they perceive pure geometric forms. The mirror's function becomes incidental, as attention shifts from reflection to the faint shapes beyond, nullifying the mirror's traditional role. These compositions serve as instruments of displacement, emphasising the materials and conditions of production over the artist's hand, allowing examination of the works' physicality independent of the creator.

As a side note: The series title Spiegel im Spiegel refers to a piece of music by Arvo Pärt, whose meditative composition inspired this four-panel series.
