Songs My Mother Taught Me
2025
Songs My Mother Taught Me is a meditation on memory, identity, and the enduring influence of maternal love, rendered through a tapestry of visual expression. Each piece draws breath from lullabies, folk songs, and intimate melodies - sonic heirlooms passed through generations.
Charcoal and wax pastels, in muted and mono-chromatic tones, linger across sheets of music, their forms harbouring echoes of a distant refrain. An intervention of layered patterns and delicate strokes embody the shifting nature of remembrance - some moments crystalline, others dissolving like melodies half-remembered, yet felt deep within us.
More than an artistic endeavour, this series is an ode to maternal legacies, an invitation to rediscover the songs that shaped us. It beckons the audience to listen—to the lessons sung in childhood, to the harmonies that time never fully erases, to the music still humming softly in the background of our lives.

As a side note: The series title Songs My Mother Taught Me draws inspiration from Antonín Dvořák’s 1880 composition for voice and piano, the fourth piece in his Gypsy Songs, Op. 55, set to poetry by Adolf Heyduk in both Czech and German.
